MLB Tickets - Fantasy: Hitters Rankings Reshuffle
by Brent Warnken
With the first half of the fantasy baseball season in the bag, let's take a look at how I'd rank the top 10 hitters in the league based on how I think they'll perform in the second half.Albert Pujols, First Base, St. Louis Cardinals: Pujols has taken over as the consensus best player in baseball.
He had a monster first half, hitting .332 while blasting 32 home runs, driving in 87 RBI and scoring 73 runs. He also stole 10 bases. There is nobody to match him in fantasy or reality. If I could purchase MLB tickets to see one player hit, it would unquestionably be Pujols.
Hanley Ramirez, Shortstop, Florida Marlins: Ramirez is the epitome of the all-around fantasy player. He's got a more complete game than anyone else in the league. In the first half he hit an NL-leading .349 with 14 homers, 61 RBI, 53 runs and 13 stolen bases. I'd expect even more steals from him in the second half as well.
Chase Utley, Second Base, Philadelphia Phillies: Utley is one of the best fantasy players in the game. He plays a premium position and gives you a little bit of everything. He hits for power and average, and steals his fair share of bases. He scores a ton of runs as well. He's elite.
David Wright, Third Base, New York Mets: Wright has been killing it in batting average, steals and runs, but his power numbers are way down. He amassed only five homers and 44 RBI in the first half, but I don't expect a player who hit more than 30 home runs and drove in more than 100 runs in each of the past two seasons to suddenly lose his pop for good.
Alex Rodriguez, Third Base, New York Yankees: A-Rod has been solid from a power perspective since returning from his hip injury, and his average seems to be coming around slowly but surely. He may not steal too many bases this season due to the injury, but he should be a great source of everything else in the second half.
Carl Crawford, Outfield, Tampa Bay Rays: Crawford is stealing bases at an amazing pace this season, but my guess is he slows down a bit in the second half. Why do I still have him ranked this high? While I think the speed numbers may slip, I think his power numbers will spike. He'll be a good source for both in the second half.
Miguel Cabrera, First Base, Detroit Tigers: Cabrera is having a very good season under the radar. In the first half, he hit .321 with 18 home runs and 50 RBI. He went on a tear in the second half last season and I'd expect him to perform well this second half as well.
Ryan Braun, Outfield, Milwaukee Brewers: Braun is having his standard season full of power, with a good average and sneaky speed.
Mark Teixeira, First Base, New York Yankees: Teixeira hit a bit of a power lull as we arrived at the break, but I think it came at the perfect time. He plays in too good of a lineup not to have a great second half.
B.J. Upton, Outfield, Tampa Bay Rays: Upton had a really rough start to the season, but I'm expecting a huge second half. He's already been stealing bases at a great pace and I expect the power to arrive shortly.
