NFL Tickets - AFC Playoff Predictions
by Brent Warnken
Starting with the New England Patriots: The Patriots are the overwhelming favorite in the East now that Tom Brady is back. Brady missed nearly all of last season, and while backup Matt Cassel did a fine job filling in, he's still no Tom Brady. Brady should pick up right where he left off with receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker, who may complement one another better than any other receiver duo in the National Football League.
The team added speedster Joey Galloway in the offseason to be the third receiver, which should add another dimension to the offense. The running game will probably be a time share as usual, but it's unclear who will receive the lion's share of the carries at this point. This offense should be an elite one this season, one that sells a ton of NFL tickets, and the Pats should cruise to the division title as long as their defense is at least decent.
AFC West Winner - San Diego Chargers: The Chargers don't look to have a ton of competition for the division crown this season. The Raiders and Chiefs are still building their young teams and the Broncos have a lot of new personnel. The Chargers should post a much better record this season as well. They've got an easier schedule and LaDainian Tomlinson appears to be at full health. The return of Shawne Merriman should help on the defensive side of the ball and I expect Antonio Cromartie to have a bounce-back season and return to 2007 form.
AFC North Winner - Pittsburgh Steelers: The Ravens will challenge for the division crown, but the Steelers are just too well-rounded. Ben Roethlisberger is a smart quarterback that makes timely plays. Willie Parker will get some help on the ground from Rashard Mendenhall, who should be able to infuse the running game with some power, something that Parker lacks. The defense is going to show up game in and game out; we know that.
AFC South Winner - Indianapolis Colts: The Colts got off to a slow start last season as Peyton Manning was coming off knee surgery and had not played in a preseason game. Even though they've got a new head coach this season in Jim Caldwell, the Colts should hit the ground running in 2009 as they've become accustomed to doing. Caldwell taking over is not like most coaching changes, as he was a part of Tony Dungy's staff as was groomed to eventually take over. Also, keep an eye on rookie running back Donald Brown.
Wildcard - Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens should only get better this season as a pair of second-year players should progress, quarterback Joe Flacco and running back Ray Rice. Flacco played conservatively last season, leading this team to the AFC Championship. He should get the green light to air it out a little more often this year now that he's had some seasoning.
Flacco's got a big arm and it should be utilized as a weapon this season. Rice is penciled in as the starting running back going into the season and could be in for a breakout year. He's got all the tools. The defense is going to be good, as usual, but could take a small step back without departed defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. Still, this team should make the playoffs fairly easily.
Wildcard - Houston Texans: I think this is the year for the Texans. They've been on the cusp of being a playoff team for a couple of years now and I think they'll make the leap this season. This prediction will ride on the health of quarterback Matt Schaub, though. Schaub is capable of being really good quarterback, but he's missed a combined 10 games in the past two seasons. The Texans' offense is really coming together nicely and the defense is solid.
