SIP is a Powerful Tool For Improving Business Communications
by Saiju George
SIP, or Session Initiated Protocol, has become the standard form of signaling for VoIP systems. This type of communication is fast, effective and flexible, allowing users from different locations to contact each other on a reliable network, and increasing the portability of equipment and phone numbers.
Unlike traditional telephony, VoIP uses the same technology to transfer voice calls as is used to transfer data over the Internet. Voice calls can be converted into packets of data through a hosted VoIP system that allows remote access via any broadband Internet connection.
SIP is a simple mechanism that operates on the 'request/response' model. It initiates the session, modifies it as needed (such as adding participants to a conference or transferring a call to a third party) and terminates the call when it is complete. It is extremely easy to incorporate and use, and the equipment needed is minimal.
Since SIP is very similar to HTTP (web based protocol) and SMTP (email based protocol) it can be implemented in tandem with many other protocols to enable users to complement their PC based software with voice capability. This allows unified communications to be incorporated seamlessly into the workplace.
SIP has the flexibility to embed phone numbers in web-pages for click to call convenience, as well as the ability to make calls from web-based applications. Calls can be transferred from one user to another using a drag and drop interface on a web-browser, and conferencing or presentations with Q&A segments can be easily carried out with participants from multiple locations at the same time.
The main advantage of SIP is the way it integrates with other protocols to provide and enhanced experience. It doesn't actually carry out extra functions or have control over specific details of each session; rather, it is a universal tool that can help other protocols run more efficiently by taking care of the nuts and bolts of session initiation and providing gateways for communications within a modular network.
SIP is completely scalable, meaning that it can be expanded to cover an almost unlimited number of connections and devices. This means any number of users can be added to an existing framework that uses SIP as a telephony administrator. SIP can be used as a gateway for communications inside an office, within a network of users, in conjunction with other networks and including remote or 'virtual' offices and telecommuting users. Anyone with an Internet connection can use hosted VoIP services to plug into the network and participate in SIP based activities.

You can currently see SIP at work in a hosted VoIP pbx or a hosted business phone service. These services often also host SIP, meaning they provide their users with a SIP address as well.
